Power restored after Cowalla bushfire while crews replacing poles

Recent stories

Western Power says power has been restored to all 150 customers affected by the bushfire in Cowalla, Wanerie and Karakin.

Twenty power poles were destroyed by the bushfire, which was reported at 12.03pm on Tuesday, December 31.

Western Power said its network operations centre was able to backfeed and restore power to about 131 customers by yesterday morning.

An emergency response generator was installed to support the community including all remaining affected customers yesterday afternoon.

Crews were able to gain access to the fire ground yesterday to conduct patrols and assess damage.

Repair work is underway and will continue today.

At 2.45pm today the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said the cause of the bushfire, which burnt 290ha, was still unknown.

The alert level for bushfire has been downgraded as the bushfire is extinguished.

A bushfire advice – threat is reduced – is in place for people in the area bounded by Nabaroo Rd, north of Orange Springs Rd, north of Bidaminna Pl and east of Cowalla Rd in Cowalla.

DFES said while the threat of the fire had reduced people should take care in the area and stay alert for potential dangers such as smoke and fallen trees and power poles.
