Lightning strike on power pole leaves 4400 residents without power

Essential Energy sent text alerts to more than 4400 customers who are affected by an unplanned power outage today, Sunday, November 10.

Areas impacted by the outage include Codrington, Bagotville, Bora Ridge, Coraki, Swan Bay, parts of Bungawalbin, Broadwater, Kilgin, Woodburn and Evans Head.

Essential Energy said a power pole and powerlines supporting 66,000 volt electricity network were damaged by the storm that hit the Northern Rivers around 6.30pm today, Sunday, November 10.

The major power pole was significantly damaged by lightning. Crews have made the pole safe and will return tomorrow to safely complete repairs.

The majority of affected customers will be without power until the repairs can be made tomorrow.

Essential Energy reminds the public to stay at least eight metres away from fallen powerlines or damaged electricity infrastructure and report immediately to 13 20 80 or if life threatening call triple zero.

Wurlitzer Bakery posted on social media how the outage would impact their three bakery stores in Evans Head and Broadwater.

“Our three locations will not have bread tomorrow, we will have pies, wraps and a very limited number of cakes.  There is only so much we can do by torchlight.

“Our stores will be ready to open as soon as power is on to supply, coffee, pies, wraps, drinks and some cakes and smoothies.”
