Future of the Obelisk

Preserving Robe’s historic landmark and popular tourist attraction, the Obelisk, in its current location is “not a responsible use of ratepayer funds”.

Following community feedback through the process of developing its Strategic Plan 2024-2028, the District Council of Robe has taken a pragmatic approach regarding the future of the Obelisk.

Mayor Lisa Ruffell indicated that while the council’s position isn’t formal, the views of the community have recently been discussed, with the conclusion that preserving the Obelisk in its current location is not a responsible use of ratepayer funds.

“While we recognise its profound historical significance, various factors such as cost, environmental impact, practicality, and community opinion present significant challenges,” she said.

Mayor Ruffell acknowledged community input on this emotive topic, stating significant efforts have been made over the years to preserve the site, and the commitment was appreciated.

However, whilst the council is aware that the Obelisk will at some stage be lost to the eroding coastline, given the unknown timeline of its demise, it has formed an opinion that it should be the council and community of the day to determine how it will be memorialised, rather than locking in any solution now that might differ over time.

“While preservation efforts will not be pursued, the council remains committed to open community dialogue and consultation on the matter,” the mayor said in a statement.
