Fletcher Griffin biography receives top award

Recent stories

Fletcher, who is a student at the Allora P-10 State School completed a biography on Aunty Flo Watson (OAM) in the “Yarning with our Elders” competition.

The Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Foundation (QATSIF), is a not-for-profit organisation that gives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families increased education choices and life opportunities.

Over the 2023 Christmas holidays, QATSIF and their partners at the Australian Catholic University invited Queensland’s First Nations secondary students to have a yarn with an Elder and Fletcher selected Aunty Flo.

Aunty Flo Watson OAM is an Elder, traditional owner and proud descendant of the Ghunghanghi People of Yarrabah with connections to the Magnetic Island peoples in North Queensland.

She is a founding member of Reconciliation Queensland and was appointed by the Queensland Premier as the first patron for Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts.

In 2015 Aunty Flo received an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her service to Indigenous Communities.

Aunty Flo works tirelessly and is highly respected as a proud advocate for truth telling, reconciliation, the Arts and education.

Fletcher chose to write about Aunty Flo’s contribution to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities as an advocate for Reconciliation and about her contribution to supporting Performing arts.

He was in awe of her determination and dedication to improving the lives of her people whilst managing her own trauma relating to the Stolen Generation.

Fletcher’s biography was awarded first place in the 2024 QATSIF Yarning with our Elders competition.

This was an amazing achievement for Fletcher and a first for Allora P-10 State School.
