Our needs and wants

Recent stories

The “needs and wants” of the district were discussed with the Governor of South Australia during her recent Vice Regal Tour of the region.

Governor Frances Adamson held informal discussions with Naracoorte-Lucindale mayor Patrick Ross, deputy mayor Monique Crossling, and CEO Trevor Smart in Naracoorte.

Speaking to The [Naracoorte] News, Mr Ross said that as the Head of State, it was important that the Governor understood the wants and needs of the region from both, a state government and local government perspective.

“While in Naracoorte, I, along with the deputy mayor and CEO, were able to have informal discussions over dinner,” he said.

“The Governor was informed of the aspiration of the community for improved sporting facilities, a need for further discussion with the Commonwealth over Adelaide being a regional city and thereby attracting all new migrants there instead of the regional towns and cities here in South Australia.”

Mr Ross said they discussed the need for more opportunities for young Australians to have access to further education in the regions that are focused on trade and allied health, all of which are in great demand.

“The Governor touched on the need for greater opportunities for students to contribute to the direction of any community with access to youth forums and the like, which may over time have them involved in greater leadership or the aspiration to leadership within the community and even further in industry or politics.

“The role of volunteers within the community was highlighted, and she is a champion for the volunteers and recognises the role they play, especially in the emergency services.”

The Governor visited Naracoorte High School, Naracoorte Livestock Exchange, and the Volunteer Firefighters Memorial, along with a tour of the Minijumbuk.

The itinerary finished at the Naracoorte Library, where the knitters were delighted to have a chat along with meeting the library staff.

“We certainly look forward to the Governor returning in the near future to see the progress of the various masterplan works we have in train over the next year or two.”

As part of her tour, the Governor also visited Millicent and Kingston.
