Long-standing tradition
A long-standing family tradition is further enhanced at this year’s Allora Show.
The Frank Phelan Memorial Trot sponsored by long established Show supporters Neil and Robyn Phelan will have a slight change in format.
The children’s event will be run at an earlier time and in three classes offering 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th prize money and ribbons.
The Show Horses Trot has a long Allora Show tradition with the first event being run by Jim Phelan and Martin Phelan some 60 plus years ago.
The brothers continued the competition into their old age with Jim’s son Frank joining them and eventually taking over.
Over the years many local children have competed in the event which delighted the Phelan family.
The Frank Phelan Memorial Trot came into being when Frank passed away and son Neil took over the sponsorship.
Neil recalls Show week as a highlight of the year.
In later years he was implored not to be doing any hay work that week.
Neil did not inherit the love of horses and he and Robyn are now stewards in the Cattle Section.
