Big turn out for Gingin local government election

Sitting councillor Frank Peczka of Lancelin has won 21.13 per cent of the vote to keep his seat on the Shire of Gingin council for the next four years.

This afternoon Mr Peczka said he was proud but humbled by the community support, which was reflected in his high first preference vote of 482.

Fellow councillor Wayne Fewster of Lennard Brook has also been returned with 13.81 per cent of the vote as has councillor Linda Balcombe of Gingin (6.58 per cent).

Out of the three candidates to be sworn in as new councillors at a special council meeting on Tuesday, October 24 Lincoln Stewart of Red Gully won 16.62 per cent of the vote, Jason Weeks (10.61 per cent) and Nikki Woods (6.18 per cent).

Mr Stewart recorded the second highest first preference vote with 379 followed by Mr Fewster with 315 and Mr Weeks with 242.

The Western Australian Electoral Commission data for the October 21 election says the total number of electors in the Shire of Gingin is 4595 and that 49.86 per cent of electors had voted.

There were 2281 formal ballot papers and 10 informal ballot papers.

At the special council meeting on Tuesday the council will elect a president and deputy president as well as appoint councillors to external bodies, committees, advisory groups and working groups.
