New Yorke Peninsula arts festival GROUNDED kicked off in emphatic style with an official opening and awards night at the Brentwood Community Hall on Friday, August 11.
People packed into the hall to begin nine days of open exhibitions, workshops, performances and interactive activities across the peninsula.
Entrants in the sculpture exhibition at Yorketown, the photography exhibition at Edithburgh and the fine art exhibition at Ardrossan were celebrated, with award winners acknowledged and their works displayed.
Ian Harradine Senior held a smoking ceremony outside the hall entrance before Kytanna and Milani Buckskin delivered a Welcome to Country.
Yorke Peninsula Council mayor Darren Braund said it was fantastic to see the event revitalised into something new.
“I’m very proud of the team behind it (the festival), proud of the event and it’s great to have it spread to new directions all around the peninsula,” he said.
“Everyone involved has worked hard, and they’ve been able to reinvigorate a longstanding and loved event into something new.”
YPC manager economic development and business sustainability Nick Perry thanked the art and cultural working party for their efforts.
“To take what was great about the traditional YP Art Exhibition and add dozens of extra activities has resulted in a fantastic and, we hope, ongoing event for our community,” he said.
“We encourage everyone to check out the GROUNDED program, available online or at venues throughout the district, and book into some of the brilliant workshops on offer.
“Some are already sold out but many more have limited places remaining so get in quick.
“The key exhibitions of fine art in Ardrossan Town Hall, photography in Tangara House, Edithburgh, and sculpture in Weaners Flat Hall, Yorketown, are all open daily 10am to 3pm right to the end of the festival on Sunday, August 20.”
