Undera update – the water recedes, the community hopes to future proof

Recent stories

Daryl Wiltshire has updated Australian Rural & Regional News on the state of things at Undera in North Central Victoria.

While the floodwaters are receding, the community is waiting and hoping that the rain that is forecast will not affect the region too much.

This video shows the dreadful aftermath of the flood (10 November 2022).

On the complex and political issue of levees, Daryl reports that,

“There has been quite a lot of dialogue with authorities on repairs to the levees. There are so many municipalities which the rivers run through, yet still no one is putting a hand up to accept responsibility for the repair of the levies.

“Nevertheless, there has been good support from local Members of Parliament listening to our concerns and promising to act in regard to future flooding.

“Local farmers and contractors put their lives at risk doing levee repairs to enable the community to move on because, if they hadn’t, the land would still be flooded.

“There will be no financial assistance given back to the contractors or the farmers who have performed these repairs.

“They are hoping for a show of resolve from the authorities who control levees to future flood proof the farming area.”

This video (7 November 2022) shows the height that the water had reached on the fence line.
