At the football, the crowd shouts ‘ball’
At petanque we can be heard with ‘boule’

There can really be no comparison between football and petanque, but as finals fever has hit Victoria, the finals games this weekend deserved a mention.

On Sunday 28 August a group from Maldon was invited to a social petanque day with the Woodend-Hanging Rock Petanque Club. It was decided to play for a trophy ‘The Dig’ which was made from an old fork bought in France.

With two late scratchings from the Maldon group, two players from WHRPC were co-opted to even things up. At the end of the day, the Maldon combined team were declared the winners 7 games to 5.

On Sunday, 4 September, we were back on our home ground for our fortnightly games. ‘The Dig’ trophy was on display for all to see. We welcomed Chantal Moritz from WHRPC, who joined us for play.

At the end of play, it was announced that George Forster was the winner with 3 wins 18 points, closely followed by Barry Droney 3 wins 15 points Coming third was Avis Hunter with 2 wins 14 points.

Our next lot of games will be on Saturday 17 September when we have been invited to the Ballarat Petanque Club with the other teams who competed in the ‘Golden Boule’ round robin tournament, to play some social games followed by lunch and presentation of the trophy to ‘Guess Who’.

Then on Sunday, 18 September, we host the Pyrenees Petanque Club for the annual playing for the ‘Rusty Poppethead’ trophy. Play starts at 11am with two games before lunch and two after.

Can we win again?
