Narrandera High School finally celebrated NAIDOC Day, its first in three years, with the Welcome to Country and Didgeridoo welcome setting the scene for a day of inclusivity and education.
The highlight of the day was the final event – the commissioning of the Stewart James mural.
Stuart explained the symbols and significance of the artwork, which is an extraordinary example of Aboriginal culture that will now form a permanent part of the Narrandera High School landscape.
Dancers were joined by students from all years to present three local dances and emotion and energy was hair-raising.
Each Year group cycled through a series of actvities including:
- Dance – led by Neville Bamblett, Xavier Beachamp, and local rangers Ben, Malek and Shane
- Aboriginal art – led by Ms Golding and Mrs Mallamace
- Aboriginal Language presented by Ms Lyons and Uncle Roley
- Aboriginal games coached by Joy O’Hara, Glen Borg and Mikey Salafia
- Aboriginal weaving demonstrated by Richard Gilbert, Mrs Hoogers, Mrs Gilmour and Mrs Vidler.
A barbecue lunch was cooked with the assistance of Clontarf members.
