Inaugural ferret race declared a winner

Recent stories

A most unusual “sporting” event was held at the Coleambally Football/Netball Club recently when the club hosted a successful inaugural ferret race meeting.

Seymour man Martin White from Whitey’s Ferret Racing Club provided the competing animals.

Mr White has owned ferrets for more than 40 years.

A large crowd was in attendance during the community event to witness the somewhat bizarre race meeting.

The club’s social events coordinator Tom Mannes hailed the club’s first ferret race event as a resounding success.

“There was close to a couple of hundred people there,” Mr Mannes said.

“It was a really good night. It was absolutely something different and something for everyone.

“I think that people enjoyed it that much that we’d be looking to do another ferret race night.”

Just like greyhound racing, the ferrets were allocated to their own stall.

They make their way to the end of a course manufactured from clear pipes, with the first one to reach the end declared the winner.

Five ferrets took part in each of the six races.

The winners of the first five races qualified to compete in the final race which was the main event.

Each ferret was “bought” during an auction before the races.

Jackie Marks and her syndicate’s winning ferret emerged triumphant in the Argus Welding Ferret Cup to cap off a successful evening.
