Paper price through the roof

Recent stories

The [Tarrangower] Times has an excellent and longstanding relationship with its printer.

That printer was the bearer of bad news recently, when it informed the Times that the cost of printing newspapers had increased significantly due to a dramatic rise in the cost of paper. It is expected there will be further price hikes in the pipeline. There is also a looming newsprint shortage.

The steep newsprint price rises have been unprecedented and have rocked the printing industry. The reasons for the crisis are varied, and include supply chain issues, increased freight costs and the fact that Russia – a major wood supplier – is subject to sanctions because of its going to war in Ukraine.

Country Press Australia combined with Australian Community Media last week to lobby the Government to support an emergency fund to assist regional newspapers to deal with price increases that may be as high as 80 per cent.

The Coalition has committed to a $10 million Public Interest News Gathering Program to support regional newspapers facing massive increases in newsprint as well as long-term sustainability of the sector. The Australian Labor Party has matched the Coalition’s commitment.

So far, the Times has absorbed the increased printing costs, and hopes that will continue to be the case.
