The Territory Labor Government’s unprecedented investment in remote housing continues this financial year with plans for a record commitment.

The infrastructure program for remote housing will rollout more than $690 million worth of works including:

  • Remote Housing Investment Package works through HomeBuild NT, Room to Breathe and Government Employee Housing ($301 million);
  • land servicing to support the Remote Housing Investment Package ($235.8 million); and
  • ongoing works to build new and improve existing housing through the national partnership agreements for Remote Housing, funded by the Commonwealth ($150.2 million).

A further $9.3 million has been budgeted for Government Employee Housing, to construct and upgrade teacher housing.

The planned yield for 2022-23 includes at least 260 new homes, and the construction of a minimum of 200 serviced lots.

Since coming to Government in 2016, the Territory Labor Government has delivered more than $999.6 million worth of housing and related infrastructure.

More than 2380 homes in remote areas across the NT have been built, upgraded and improved.  This includes works completed and underway and amounts to around 6500 new living spaces.

Contract periods between three and five years enable sustainable jobs including apprenticeships and certifications for local workers.

Representing a significant transfer of power to remote Aboriginal communities, select tenders are offered to locally-based Aboriginal Business Enterprises as part of our commitment to building the capacity of these communities, helping them to become sustainable into the future.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Remote Housing and Town Camps Chansey Paech:

“This significant investment, which includes contributions from both the Territory and Australian governments, will be the biggest spend within the program so far and sets a record for the Northern Territory.

“Our investment in housing is fundamental to better outcomes across the board and the cornerstone of economically viable, skilled communities.

“The new financial year comes with exciting prospects for our remote housing program, and I’m looking forward to seeing many of our projects come to fruition.”
