Local artists Sally Anderson and Kerry Punton are displaying their beautiful works of art at Harcourt General Store.

The theme, contemporary chinoiserie, examines the 17th and 18th-century western style of interior design that represents fanciful European Interpretations of Chinese styles.

Kerry, trained as a Ceramic Artist at Latrobe in Bendigo, has beautiful handcrafted ceramic works on display, inspired by the exploration of blue and white ceramics with elements of the Willow Pattern; temple, willow, bridge and boat, as well as beautifully framed canvas paintings inspired by french wallpaper designs.

Kerry said, “Chinoiserie style wallpaper has no edge and uses natural forms. Living on a farm in Eastville (15 minutes from Maldon), my inspiration has come from birds, flora and fauna from around Central Victoria.”

For Sally, traditionally a landscape artist, the exhibition was inspired by her life in Paris. Unable to travel during COVID, Sally transported herself back to her studio in France by designing paintings inspired by chinoiserie wallpaper.

“It was a huge learning curve, working with flat decoration, not looking at the foreground and background,” said Sally, who has spent 15 years painting in Paris and Barcelona and currently resides on 120 acres on a Trust for Wildlife in Walmer. “I missed travelling so much during lockdown, so I began painting wallpaper designs in the french motif.”

The exhibition will run until June at Harcourt General Store, so make sure to head over, grab a coffee and admire the vibrant artwork.
