Describing herself as disappointed by what she sees in politics, Dr Hanabeth Luke firmly believes “we can do better.”

Driven by her determination to restore trust, honesty and integrity in Government while advocating for climate action, stronger funding for equitable healthcare, strengthening the regional economy, and fighting for a fair future, Dr Luke has nominated as an independent candidate for the seat of Page at the upcoming Federal election.

As a senior lecturer of regenerative agriculture at Southern Cross University, Dr Luke is passionate about the environment, education, her local community, and giving people a voice who will actively listen to them and fairly and honestly represent them in Canberra.

Dr Luke said she felt inspired to nominate last year after reading essays prepared by her students on droughts, fires and floods which brought her to tears due to the ongoing hardships they were experiencing with extreme events and climate disruption.

“The same day, Barnaby Joyce (Deputy Prime Minister) said we can’t afford to cut emissions and that made my blood boil,” she recalled.

“So, I decided to do something about it and take a stand to make a positive difference.”

As part of her campaign, Dr Luke revealed she has spent countless hours meeting and speaking with local landholders and rural producers, representatives from the fishing industries and community members, engaging with them and welcoming their opinions of what matters most, what changes are needed, and why.

Identifying the regions housing crisis as another policy she is eager to address, Dr Luke said it’s important for the electorate to have a representative they can trust, openly approach and have confidence in.

“We need to tackle these issues raised head on,” she said.

“That is my passion, I’m very passionate about what I stand for.

“Our farmers want to feel supported and listened to by the Government because they feel they’re being abandoned by the major parties and they’re not feeling represented, and that absolutely needs to change.

“Farmers look after the land, and they need to feel valued.

“We need to work towards a fair future for everyone, ensure people have accessibility to education and affordable housing, and restore their faith in the Government.

“That is what I want.”

Dr Luke said she will also support a Federal anti-corruption commission and will represent the electorate of Page with passion and integrity. For more information, visit www.hanabethluke.com.au
