Independent challenges Mallee

Recent stories

After 14 years as a rural journalist, Sophie Baldwin is aiming to transform her passion for rural communities to a potent political voice for the federal seat of Mallee.

Ms Baldwin believes it is time for Mallee to have an independent voice.

“I think most people are sick of petty party politics,” said Ms Baldwin.

“There are genuine concerns in Mallee that must be addressed, including access to health, day care, aged care, the environment and telecommunications, to rural rates up to six times above their city counterparts. The average wage in Mallee is $500 per week less than the national average.”

Prior to journalism, Ms Baldwin was involved in a 300-head family dairy farm and since 2020, has been CEO of Southern Riverina Irrigators.

“Like most rural and regional people, my life has always been about community.

 Politics wasn’t on my radar.”

“I was approached to stand last year, and while it took me a bit to come around, I decided if I don’t put my hand up and have a go, nothing will change – and Mallee certainly needs change.”

Ms Baldwin is keen to hear the concerns of people from across Mallee.

“We have such a big electorate with diverse issues.”

“Already, I have heard many concerns from residents, from poor infrastructure investment, declining standards of living, reduced access to community, and concerns for our environment.”

“I’m a mother of two daughters and I want my kids to have the best opportunity for a bright and prosperous future. Sometimes, no matter how intimidating it might seem, you have to be the change you want to see.”

“I won’t have all the answers, but I believe you can hold honesty and integrity as your core values, listen to people with willingness and enthusiasm and act for the electorate who put their faith in you.”

As a member of the Echuca-Moama Tri Club and an ironman competitor, Ms Baldwin will need all the stamina she can muster as we rapidly approach the 2022 Australian federal election, set to take place on or before May 21.
