Chansey Paech, Minister for Remote Housing and Town Camps (NT), Media Release, 5 February 2022

The Territory Labor Government has awarded a $15 million tender to Northern Territory company GT Builders to construct homes in the remote community of Maningrida.

A mixture of duplex, quadruplex and multiple bedroom homes – amongst the first tranche of works worth $6.8 million – will be built on the remaining blocks of a 30-lot subdivision constructed in 2019 to support the Homebuild program.

These works continue the Territory Labor Government’s significant housing investment in Maningrida following the awarding of another $15 million tender to local Aboriginal Business Enterprise, Bawinanga Aboriginal Corporation, in November last year.

Two other Territory companies, SH Build and Kalidonis have completed contracts towards the rollout of 95 homes in the community, set in the heart of Arnhem Land.

The tender also includes a new round of Room to Breathe works across the community.

The Territory Labor Government’s Remote Housing Investment Package, worth $2.1 billion, has stepped up a pace following completion of early works such as the construction of subdivisions.

Recent milestones include the first tenders awarded as part of an $81 million joint investment between the NT Government and the Anindilyakwa Land Council to build 150 homes across the Groote Archipelago; and a $51.5 million contract to Aboriginal Business Enterprise Bukmak Constructions to build 87 homes in Galiwin’ku.

Further tenders have been released for major projects in Central Australia, Gunbalanya, Wurrumiyanga, Ngukurr, Rittarangu, Yirrkala and Milikapiti and are expected to be awarded in the near future.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Remote Housing and Town Camps Chansey Paech:

“The Territory Labor Government’s program is changing the housing and social landscape across the Territory’s remote communities.

“We’re building, extending and upgrading homes in the bush because better homes mean better health, education, employment and wellbeing outcomes,” he said.

“Community involvement is at the core of planning, design and construction because our remote housing strategy is as much about job creation, training and skills development as it is about providing safe, healthy homes.”

Quotes attributable to GT Builders managing director Paul Tsougranis:

“Our company has recently completed housing works in Yarralin and Minyerri and our team is looking forward to starting work in Maningrida.

“Locals will be employed on the project and they’ll have the opportunity to kick start their careers in the construction industry with certifications and apprenticeships.

“With the contract running over several years, there is time to complete formal training including certifications and apprenticeships.”
