The Barossa Food Security Network is calling on the community to support the emergency food relief initiative by becoming a supplier or distributor of cooked meals.

Barossa Mayor Bim Lange says the network is currently distributing around 85 meals a week to people experiencing hardship, and demand is increasing.

“The network has been effective in quickly engaging people experiencing an emergency, including people who would not normally seek help,” said Mayor Lange.

“This includes vulnerable young families and their elderly close family, and people experiencing mental health challenges or financial stress.”

Established in August 2020 by The Barossa Council in conjunction with Southern Barossa Alliance, the Barossa Food Security Network provides a co-ordinated response to emergency food relief across the Council area.

Stakeholders currently supplying or distributing frozen meals include Southern Barossa Alliance, Williamstown Hotel, Impact Church, Lutheran Care, Lyndoch Hill, Kind Hearted Kitchen and the Vine Inn.

“We know the service is stretched to its limits,” said Mayor Lange. “By expanding the network of stakeholders, either as suppliers or distributors, we can ensure food relief is directed where it’s most needed across the region.”
