Operating under special legislation, the SEWCD Act mainly provides for the conservation and management of water and the prevention of flooding of rural land, among other things.

Water buybacks have taken a toll on education in the southern NSW Murray-Darling Basin, with school principals linking falling enrolments and subject choices to the lasting socioeconomic impacts of past Government purchases. A NSW Irrigators’ Council (NSWIC) analysis of enrolment data, supported by interviews with school principals, shows how water buybacks are contributing to a loss of population and jobs and therefore fewer enrolments, subject choice and resources for regional schools.

Widespread water protest planned: NSW Farmers Association

The coordinated action led by Deniliquin, Griffith and Leeton councils, along with key farming groups such as NSW Farmers and businesses, will see towns across multiple states host demonstrations on Tuesday, November 21, sharing the message that a rewrite of the Murray Darling Basin Plan will cost thousands of jobs and slash almost $1bn worth of food and fibre from farms.

Lifeline for critically endangered wetland plant
Two small wetlands in the middle of western Victoria are at the heart of a plan to bring back a critically endangered aquatic plant. Davis’s Dam on private farmland between Lake Buloke and Birchip, and Creswick Dam north of Marnoo, are being managed with water for the environment partly to help re-establish the marbled marshwort aquatic plant.

Kidney-leaf mud plantain (Heteranthera reniformis) is an aquatic weed that was brought to Australia as a decorative pond plant. It has since washed into our freshwater waterways where it slows the movement of water, impedes the growth of native water plants, and reduces the food supply for aquatic life.
DA deferred to consult Yaegl people
A DA for a 36-lot subdivision at Orion Drive, Yamba, over an area that is predominantly water, has been deferred for one month by Clarence Valley Council to allow consultation with the Yaegl Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation ... this was the second time the DA had been on public exhibition ... the initial DA was lodged in September 2020.
Nhill Lake’s stunning transformation
Nhill Lake is looking fantastic at the moment. This photo was taken by I See You Photography on the weekend, the lake is looking amazing thanks to a lot of work by the Nhill Lake Committee and volunteers. President of the Nhill Lake Committee Stuart Bone said, "The blueness of the Lake is ‘enviro dye’ to cut the UV rays getting to the weeds." ... Don’t forget there are a number of fish at a catchable size that were stocked in the lake late last month.
Elliott Stronger Sisters clear environmental waste
Pam Dillon. Girls from the Elliott school Stronger Sisters program recently held their annual canoe camp at Longreach Waterhole ... all the girls became involved in a cleanup and cleared two garbage bags of cans and plastic bottles and a bag of general rubbish.
