Dark Days: The Goldfields Gothic

The Goldfields Gothic Festival of Dark Ideas – in only its second incarnation - has already taken its place alongside the Easter Fair, the Folk Festival, Maldon in Winter and others as a not-to-be-missed event on the calendar. The weather is always a factor, and this year it began on a gloomy Friday, cleared on Saturday and ended in glorious sunshine on Sunday.

Paintings from Florence coming to St. Arnaud

The St Arnaud Raillery Hub Gallery is delighted to present an extraordinary art exhibition, “La Dolce Vita! ... Paintings from Florence”.   The exhibition features the mesmerizing works of Hannah Sutton, and “Painting and Printmaking with Light” by Castlemaine’s Malini Lewis.

KickAss music and camping festival

With a legendary lineup of Australian talent, featuring James Reyne, The Beautiful Girls, Kingswood, Dragon, Ash Grunwald, Sunny Coast Rude Boys  & more,  KickAss Festival  have announced the addition of another Australian mainstay, with iconic rock band  The Choirboys joining the lineup. With  3 x ARIA Top 30  charting albums between 1983-1991,  The Choirboys amassed a cult-like following of adoring fans, with 1987’s single ‘Run To Paradise’ a track reminisced by audiences of all ages, even today.

Spring Street Tractor Rally; August 15: “Stop the Towers”

On Tuesday, August 15, the Regional Victoria Power Alliance of farmers, their rural, regional, and suburban neighbours, retail and tourism business owners, and many other community members will be holding their "Stop the Towers" Rally in Melbourne, on the steps of Parliament and in Spring Street itself ... "Stop the Towers" spokesperson Glenden Watts, "the naked farmer" from Yeungroon, says that he and everyone else in the western and northwestern regions only learnt earlier this year that they were in an "area of interest" for VNI West.

Truckin’ good results

Casino Truck Show became the biggest truck show in the Southern Hemisphere on Saturday, August 5, when about 600 trucks rolled into town. The Tiny Lollback Rig of the Show went to Luke Wilson, Bulmer’s Transport. Luke’s T908 rig has travelled 1.9 million kilometres.

Inaugural carriage event coming to Allora

Mark this date on your calendar - Sunday 20th August at 9am when the Allora Showgrounds will be filling up with some beautiful horses and ponies in carriages as the Show Society holds its first ever Allora Carriage Driving Gymkhana! ... At the end of the day there will be the much anticipated Queensland Precision Driving Off the Track feature event where the carriage must move through an obstacle course of cones in the fastest time.

Recreational fishers and boaters from all corners of the state will again have the chance to discuss their much-loved pastimes and share ideas to make fishing even better at a series of free Fishing and Boating Forums. These forums, hosted by local fishing clubs, have become an annual tradition, with this year marking the third consecutive instalment.

Hunt clubs like Barwon in their element when winter bites

Deep in winter is when the hunt clubs gather socially to show off their horses as saddle mounts, working hunters and in hunters’ plates. Barwon Hunt Club held its show last weekend, with some quality horses put forward for Mariece Paine to judge. The show was an opportunity to pay respects to hunting identity Kathleen Cust, who died recently at the age of 78.

Real Life a rare treat

In the 1980s, Iconic Australian synth-pop band Real Life earned widespread recognition and international success with their 1983 chart-topping synth-pop single 'Send Me an Angel'. And next Saturday 5 August, you have the chance to hear them perform live as part of the Goldfields Gothic Festival.

Rodeo looking to rope in a big crowd

Mallee Machinery Field Days

For four decades, the Speed Lions Club has been responsible for bringing the Mallee’s largest agricultural event to fruition each year. It’s no mean feat for the dedicated group of 26 volunteers, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to organise the two-day event, showcasing the latest in agricultural machinery and technology.
