Fishery status reports released
A new report from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) has found that fish stocks in Australian Government solely managed fisheries are not subject to overfishing.
Powering up new jobs in our forestry transition: Vic Govt
Victoria Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas has announced that Spiegel Energy in partnership with Radial Timber and the Yarram Community Energy Group have received $2 million from the Victorian Government through its Forestry Plan to establish a renewable energy park at the Radial Timber mill. The energy park is expected to create five full-time roles and turn Radial Timber into a fully closed loop site. It will turn waste from the mill’s operations into energy and heat, creating new revenue streams with excess energy running into the local electricity grid.

GrainCorp to hone in on AgTech for the future
GrainCorp has partnered with AgTech company Hone to support the development of technology that will revolutionise testing methods for growers. The agribusiness is investing in the Newcastle-based start-up by acquiring a 15 per cent share, in a move that will add to the company’s high standard quality-testing capabilities. Hone’s technology can be used to analyse grain quality, soil carbon, and many other agricultural products and inputs.
Farmers demand government repay carbon theft
The state’s leading agricultural organisation is calling on the federal government to repay billions owed to farmers. Costly emissions reduction action taken by farmers to help Australia meet its Kyoto commitments resulted in a surplus of 431 million tonnes of carbon captured – worth more than $30 billion* today. NSW Farmers President James Jackson said the balance sheet must be squared before the federal government signs up to any deals at Glasgow.
Beekeeping allowed to continue in Queensland national parks for now
The Queensland Government has approved the preparation of legislative amendments to grant a 20-year extension to allow beekeeping to continue in national parks until 2044 ... The decision will formally extend beekeeping permits for a further 20 years in certain national parks that were created as part of the SEQ Forest Agreement in 1999.
Farmers want Kyoto ledger squared
National Farmers Federation President Fiona Simson says while Australian farmers continue to lead the world in improved sustainability and emissions reduction it is time to address the inequities of the past. "Farmers have been at the forefront of Australia’s efforts to meet climate change targets for decades, although not always knowingly." Ms Simson said in the 1990s and early 2000s, Queensland and NSW farmers were victims of land clearing legislation that removed their property rights, without compensation.
Sheep flock predicted to reach 70 million this year
The forecast of a wet spring in many key sheep producing regions in Australia will drive the national flock to over 70 million head in 2021, according to Meat & Livestock Australia’s 2021 October sheep industry projections.
New era for Kimberley beef processing welcomed
The McGowan Government has welcomed the announcement of a new co-operative of northern pastoralists to own and operate northern Western Australia's only abattoir. The Kimberley Meat Co-operative (KMC) will acquire the beef processing facility 100km east of Broome, operating the facility on a contract based with its members and processing at least 40,000 head of cattle per year.
SA harvest tipped to reach record $2.8 billion value
The SA State Government’s latest Crop and Pasture Report indicates South Australian grain production is set for 7.98 million tonnes, close to the 10-year average of 8 million tonnes. SA Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development David Basham said South Australian farmers may be able to capitalise on unfavourable conditions in other world grain producing countries.

New name for IFA/AFG to reflect the future of forestry
The professional association representing some 1,000 forest scientists, researchers and professional forest land managers  in Australia will soon be known by a new name. The Institute of Foresters of Australia and Australian Forest Growers (IFA/AFG) has announced it will launch a new identity at its upcoming national conference, which will be held in Launceston and online in a hybrid model, from 11 to 14 October 2021.
Agricultural land prices continue to climb as availability diminishes
Farmers are getting FOMO as agricultural land availability dwindles amid excellent seasonal conditions and commodity pricing, and land prices are expected to climb for at least the next five years as a result, with the sharpest growth to 2023.
Wanderribby grazing property sells
The McKenna family behind Midfield Meat Group has acquired the Wanderribby feedlot and grazing and farming property in South Australia, four years after the vendors initially put the asset to the market with hopes of as much as $10 million. South Australia’s third-largest feedlot, the 2,311-hectare Wanderribby has been used as a custom feedyard, feeding for three main clients, including at times Coles and Woolworths supermarket contracts, and the yard utilised in the past as a live export depot.
Eyre Peninsula cropping farm set to attract strong interest
A large dryland cropping farm on Eyre Peninsula in South Australia has entered the market after being held by one family for four generations. Telusa, the 988-hectare property, is located in the Cleve Hills, 21km north of Cleve and 164km north east of Port Lincoln and has been in the current owners family since the early 1900s.
MoU to grow agricultural trade between Pacific Island Countries and Australia
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment and  DT Global  will grow agricultural trade between Pacific Island countries and Australia, through improved food security, better market access and biosecurity outcomes.
More support arrives for state’s farmers
Almost 500 foreign workers will be added to NSW's agricultural workforce, joining the more than 2,000 whose arrival the NSW Government has already aided, to provide additional support to industry through the COVID-exacerbated labour shortage. Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall said while this would be welcome news for the state’s farmers, the NSW Government was constantly reviewing its support measures to give industry the best help it can, and that continued today.
Pollen home delivery sweet for honey bees
Scientists are exploring the use of mobile polliniser units to improve cross-pollination in netted apple orchards in a new trial being delivered through Hort Innovation in partnership with the University of Adelaide. Â Over the past 14 months, scientists have been working with apple growers in the Adelaide Hills as part of the project, which aims to solve the challenges involved in using honey bees to cross-pollinate in undercover settings.
Tania Maxwell votes to support timber industry
Tania Maxwell MP has opposed legislation that would adversely affect the timber industry in Northern Victoria. The Forests Legislation Amendment (Compliance and Enforcement) Bill 2019 will increase opportunities for prosecution against VicForests contractors in a move Ms Maxwell said was unnecessary and excessive.
