Whyalla City Council, Media Release, 27 May 2026

The creativity of local and regional artists will once again be celebrated as the 2026 Cuttlefest Art Prize Exhibition opens at the Middleback Arts Centre on Tuesday, 2 June at 6pm, featuring the exhibition launch, awards presentation and panel session.

Presented in partnership with Whyalla Business and Tourism, Whyalla City Council and Country Arts SA, the exhibition showcases artworks inspired by the Australian Giant Cuttlefish and Whyalla’s unique coastal environment. Over 50 artworks will remain on display throughout June and July, providing community members and visitors with the opportunity to explore and enjoy this diverse collection. Over 20 individual artists have entered the Art Prize, and more than 170 students contributed to the exhibition across six Whyalla Schools and Child Care Centres.

Whyalla City Council & Country Arts SA, Arts and Cultural Facilitator Teresa Coles said the exhibition was a valuable opportunity to celebrate Whyalla’s unique Cuttlefish Aggregation and also showcase the creativity within the region.

“Events like the Cuttlefest Art Prize highlight the importance of the amazing costal waters of Whyalla and the incredible talent we have in our community,” Ms Coles said.

“The exhibition invites people to experience a wide range of artistic expression while supporting local artists and engaging with our arts community. Whether you are a regular gallery visitor or simply curious to see what our local creatives have been working on, we encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the exhibition.”

“We also want you to vote for your favourite art piece with the People’s Choice voting open until 28 June. Visit the Middleback Arts Centre during opening hours to place your vote’.

All Whyalla artists, their families and the business community are invited on Tuesday 2 June for the Opening Night and Awards Presentation, proudly sponsored by Spencer Gulf Adventures.
