The Riverland’s Indigenous community is needing “practical outcomes” from bureaucratic processes that benefit all involved, according to a senior local politician.

Riverland-based MLC, and SA Liberal leader in the Legislative Council, Nicola Centofanti last week met with numerous senior local Indigenous community representatives at the Berri riverfront.

Dr Centofanti said ensuring all Riverland Indigenous voices were heard was crucial toward community progress.

“The Elders I spoke to aren’t asking for another layer of bureaucracy,” Dr Centofanti said.

“They are asking to be heard. They spoke about the lack of accountability in the current system and the frustration that their voices, as Elders, are being sidelined.

“There was a clear message, which was less symbolism and more practical outcomes.

“They want real engagement, real respect, and real change on the ground, not structures that speak over them.”

Berri man Tyson Lindsay – who was present at the meeting – said it was necessary to illustrate current community leadership issues at a high level.

“This is an important moment culturally for the Murray Mallee, as Elders have unified on common views,” Mr Lindsay said.

“Local autonomy is important to the Elders of this region, (and) culture must uphold principles, otherwise the integrity of that culture is at risk.

“The governance of Aboriginal affairs feels outdated and lacks leadership.”
