Health service sees red over finances

Recent stories

Claims that Corryong Health will struggle to meet its immediate financial commitments have been refuted by board chairman, Ian Cesa.

Liberal Member for Berwick, Brad Battin, alleged last Thursday that several hospitals in the North East including Corryong are operating with little cash on hand.

“Victorians continue to pay the price of Labor’s financial mismanagement as new figures confirm several health services remain on financial life support,” Mr Brattin said.

“Internal Department of Health data has revealed several Victorian health services are operating with limited available cash holdings – that is, money available to pay operating costs such as staff wages, invoices and utility bills – as of December 2025.”

Corryong Health has stated that Mr Battin based his claims on data that is factually incorrect and it has been working with the Department of Health for some months to rectify issues within the system.

Meanwhile, Mr Cesa says that Corryong Health has more than two months of cash available to fund operations.

“The Victorian Agency for Health Information (VAHI) benchmark relevant to the claim made by Brad Battin, is for health services to have available cash to fund operations for 14 days,” he said.

“Furthermore, based on a report to the Health Department, after a forecast operating deficit for 2024-25 of more than $1 million, Corryong Health is on track to break even, which is what the department expects of all of its health services.

“Unlike Brad Battin, we are not interested in making a political point one way or another. We are only interested in ensuring the continued success of Corryong Health,” Mr Cesa added.
