Last month Architecture was the topic, and Allora Photography Group (APG) members wandered near and far to find that special image and gain that illusive Honour which must meet some very strict criteria for John Stewart to award.
John was APG’s first PSQ judge and is now a steadfast favourite. The improvement of the images submitted by the members is a testament to his guidance and direction.
“Choose Your God” by Michael Campbell made members feel a little dizzy with the towering heights. John however saw more in this photograph especially the thought provoking title. The contrast between the ornate neo-gothic architecture of St John’s Cathedral and the brutal design of the BHP building is well depicted. Converging verticals is usually frowned upon in architectural photography but Michael has captured a very powerful image here and received an Honour.
“Lone Performer” by Glenda Guy showed the large scale of the Home of the Arts Outdoor Stage on the Gold Coast is evident when compared to the very small size of the man. Including something familiar in architectural photos is often very effective in providing a sense of scale and people add that human interest. Composition has been handled well with the diagonal alignment. Unfortunately, Glenda may have been a little heavy handed on the saturation of colours making the vegetation a little too vivid in “Lone Performer”, and a Merit was awarded.
Sally Wadsworth used the photographic technique of multiple exposures to create this very imaginative “City Scape” montage. A very novel way of depicting the various styles of architecture. The only criticism John had was some blown highlights, but Sally received an Honour for her brave and thoughtful interpretation of the set subject.
Another imaginative and different interpretation of the architectural subject was presented by Michelle Campbell’s “Warped Outlook”. The distortions in this Brisbane skyline reflection creates great impact and has been well spotted and well composed. Unfortunately, some pixelation was spotted by our judge and a Highly Commended was awarded.
At tonight’s Christmas breakup dinner members will vote for photo of the year.
