Yanchep Netball Club, which has more than 200 members, says it supports having netball included as an official sport in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
Club president Stephanie Scott said without a doubt the skilled, teamwork-based sport of netball, should be played at the Olympic games.
“Our young players need to see that netball can be played at the world’s highest level and strive to one day be there playing for our country or proudly supporting the team that represents our great nation,’’ she said.
“The more that netball is seen by the world the better, so that everyone can experience our great game that we love so much here in Australia.
“In Australia netball is our most popular female sport, with over one million players and to play in front of a home crowd would be a great way to introduce netball to the Olympic games.”
Pearce MHR Tracey Roberts is one of the people supporting the call for netball to be included in the Brisbane 2032 Olympics.
The netball 2032 Olympic bid cites several reasons the sport should be included in the 2032 games, from global popularity to netball’s values and growing fandom.
The bid says netball has global recognition and is not just a Commonwealth sport and that the sport is broadcast in more than 100 countries with the 2025 Suncorp Super Netball having a 300-million global broadcast reach.
Also netball requires a unique skillset and some of the most athletic sportspeople in the world and it demonstrates Olympic values, including speed teamwork, athleticism and inclusivity.
Netball is Australia’s most popular female team sport and more than one million play it – the cultural relevance of playing netball in front of a home nation is huge.
Finally, the bid says infrastructure in Queensland for netball already exists so its inclusion in the 2032 Olympics would be logistical, seamless and cost-effective.
