Narrandera RSL carries on the ANZAC tradition with dawn service and march

Although skies threatened rain and the school holidays pulled numbers down, Narrandera’s ANZAC spirit was still alive and well at last Friday’s commemorations to mark the 110th anniversary of ANZAC Day to honour Australia’s fallen.

About 140 early risers gathered for the solemn Dawn Service, while 20 made their way to the War Graves for a quiet moment of reflection.

Narrandera RSL Sub Branch Secretary/Treasurer Neville Wortlehock said the service “went off fairly well” with a “decent turnout throughout the day despite the challenges.”

“Numbers were down from previous years at the Dawn Service and the Gunfire Breakfast was also down,” Mr Wortlehock said. “The main service was well attended with about 700.”

With eyes on the future, Mr Wortlehock put out the call for new affiliate members to join the Sub Branch – a chance for locals to support the RSL and help carry the ANZAC legacy forward.

Mr Wortlehock also praised the professionalism of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) contingent in attendance at the service. “The Catafalque Party from RAAF Base Wagga did a great job,” he said.

“We had 70 attendees for the ANZAC lunch which was a great success, sadly we had eight members who were too unwell to attend.”

“We will be looking for new affiliate members who wish to join the RSL (at no cost) to help keep the ANZAC spirit alive.”

Locals rallied behind the Sub Branch with badge sales and the ANZAC Day raffle, drawn at the luncheon.

Narrandera Bakery claimed first prize, with second prize going to Vicki Wortlehock – both tickets drawn from a black plastic bag by two young guests attending with their grandfather who is a veteran.

Offering heartfelt thanks to the community, Mr Wortlehock also said the youth of Narrandera didn’t go unnoticed either.

“I must acknowledge the young school captains and speakers who did a fantastic job with their presentations and we know that there are many who will go on to become great citizens for Narrandera in the future,” Mr Wortlehock said.

“I sincerely thank the people of Narrandera who supported us with purchasing badges and the raffle during these difficult times with the cost of living – I thank them all.”
