They say that you can’t be what you can’t see.

For a small country town Kyogle punches above its weight when it comes to sporting talent, achieving greatness and inspiring the next generation.

From state, to national, to international champions through to Olympians – Kyogle’s sporting achievements are on exhibition at Kyogle Museum.

On display are a myriad of sporting memorabilia items – each piece telling its own unique sporting story.

One treasured piece is a framed piece of Olympic history – Athol McQueen’s 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games blazer.

Back in 1964, Athol was matched against the United States representative, a bloke nicknamed Smokin Joe, also known as Joe Frazier.

During their bout, Athol knocked Joe to the floor, but Frazier recovered, won the bout and went on to win the gold medal.  The rest is history.

Be inspired by the region’s sporting prowess.

The exhibition Kyogle Sporting Prowess is a historical retrospective exhibition at Kyogle Museum at 19 Bloore Street, Kyogle. Open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.
