Robe inspires New Talent artist

Naracoorte artist, Lisa Caon is the first to exhibit in 2025 in the New Talent Art Space at the Naracoorte Regional Art Gallery.

Her exhibition entitled “I See You Wave” features seascapes and mosaics inspired by Lisa’s lifelong association with Robe which began with childhood stays at the coastal town with her grandparents.

In more recent years she has regularly visited Robe as part of her job.

Opening alongside the Country Arts SA touring exhibition Island Welcome, Lisa said she enjoys the colours of Robe, of the sea, the skies and the waves. She began her current group of works with an on-line art course which taught painting techniques for all three.

Lisa, a board member of the Gallery, rents a room as her studio and says her Sunday afternoon painting sessions there are like art therapy.

Beginning on mosaics as her art practice, Lisa has now moved on to canvas. She was involved in the project which produced the mosaic work at the Naracoorte Swimming Lake in Moore St.

Her most recent work is a painting of an aerial view of the Robe Bay shore. To achieve this she took a photograph from the headland and looked at the detail once it was enlarged, to incorporate into her painting.

The exhibition title is a line from a poem written by Heather Lloyd and Lisa and it accompanies the artwork.

Both exhibitions run at the gallery until March 2 and are supported by Aboriginal Art from the Naracoorte Regional Art Gallery collection in the Bainger Gallery.

The Gallery is open five days a week – Wednesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 3pm.
