Our topic last month was Monochrome. Typically, monochrome is taken to mean Black and White, but it also encapsulates differing tones of a single colour for example, red fading to pale pink. Most members stayed in the safe zone of shades of grey.

Michelle C took her black and white image “Spotlighting” and reversed the tones to give the effect of a negative, earning an Honour. Judge John Stewart commented “It’s a simple yet effective image with the trees contrasting with, and being balanced by, the boulders on the right. The black sky works very effectively to make the trees and rocks stand out. Well done for trying something different.”

Jan found “The Lighthouse” at Cape Leeuwin was the perfect subject for a monochrome treatment, using a low angle to show it rising starkly white into a dark sky. This shot earned a Merit, “…its central composition working well to emphasise its domination of its surroundings”.

Gale’s “Misty Trees”: Merit. The two large trees in the foreground frame the scene, and the light filtering through the mist creates a quiet, atmospheric mood and helps to softens any distractions from the foliage in the background. Judge John felt that the remnant of barbed wire fence along the bottom of the frame could be removed.

“Moogerah Dam wall” by Lisa was Highly Commended by Judge John. He commented: “The temptation here would have been to compose the photo with the dam wall filling the frame but instead the author has used the lead in lines of the fences to take us into the photo and then to the dam wall itself. This has made for a stronger and more interesting composition and a more pleasing photo”.

Our final topic for the year is “Continuum” which is defined as: A series of four images, related in time, that tell a story.

This will close off a very interesting year which has seen us gain access to our own website as part of the MyPhotoClub network, and fully adopt the Rubric scoring system which will allow us to introduce a grading system.

We will celebrate the end of the year’s activities with a breakup dinner on Wednesday 11th. December.
