New barber hunts the good life

While the fishing and hunting opportunities in the region have brought Stuart Gallus to Corryong, his profession as a master barber has also filled a niche on the local business front.

After operating a barbershop in Broome for the past 25 years, the former Beechworth resident packed up his belongings and headed east to spend more time pursuing his interests and Corryong has fit the bill.

“I built the business up in Broome to where I had 12 staff but it was time for a change,” Stuart said.

“I like to think I’m semi-retired but I still need to pay the bills though, which is why I opened The Corryong Barber Shop.”

Modelled on the traditional ‘gentleman’s barber shop’ complete with chair, Stuart offers classic and contemporary haircuts as well as a shave – with a cutthroat razor if you want to go real old school! Stuart is an avid bow hunter and the shop boasts a number of trophies on the wall.

The Corryong Barber Shop is open from Wednesday through to Saturday morning at 9am on a ‘walk-in’ basis.

“I want my customers to feel welcome in the shop and they can also have a beer if there is a bit of a wait – after 10am that is,” Stuart added.
