Which mural for Allora?

Recent stories

The Allora mural designs have been completed and are ready for the Allora community to vote on the winning design.

Artists Jordan and Steve have supplied an explanation on each of the designs and have taken on board the ideas so generously shared by the Allora community.

Due to other jobs that have been scheduled up until Christmas the mural is planned to be painted in the second week of January next year.

The Allora Community can now cast their vote at the Allora IGA store.

Design 1 was created after discussions with Allora locals. I wanted to represent a few different elements of the town, while keeping a balanced composition and colour palette. Featuring a sunflower field (which was unanimously popular with the locals we spoke with). The Red Winged Parrot, local to the area, representing the natural world. A detail of a tractor, paying homage to the agricultural side of town, and the Allora Heritage weekend. The Homes & Co. building, which used to sit where the IGA is now, paying respect to the town’s history. The Saucepan star constellation features in the top right corner as symbolising ‘the Pleiades’ (The Seven Sisters). Due to the deep grooves of the brick substrate, larger images are used in the design. Once painted, the larger images will be visually clear, as opposed to smaller imagery. The colour palette was designed with the longevity of the piece in mind.

Voting will close Tuesday 2nd January.

Thanks go to the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal, University of Southern Queensland and the Southern Downs Regional Council for making it possible to add this exciting mural to the “Best Little Town on the Downs.”

Design 2 reflects many of the ideas discussed in the community consultation sessions conducted in town. The vibrancy and sense of hope evoked from sunflower fields and sunset creating the backdrop for the work. The unique store fronts and gabled roofing of the main street as well as the Mary Poppins house are referenced on the left with a spectacular astral photograph from the region overlayed on the corrugated iron roof. The weatherboards morph into the landscape with the head of the Redwing Parrot on the handle of the resting umbrella. The historic Holmes and Co. building is overlayed onto the first flying flag paying homage to the history of the town. A rose robin overlayed onto a flying kite references the cherished bird life found in and around town. Some cheeky cattle from local photographer Chris Munro peer out of the long grass flanked by a large sunflower in the foreground.
