Castlemaine Theatre Company is bringing Under Milk Wood to the stage, and the production features a significant Maldon contingent. Set in a seaside town and written by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, it features glimpses into the dreams and lives of various eccentric townsfolk.
“A large proportion of the cast and crew are Maldon residents,” says the director, Michelle Dorian. “It’s possible that the actors relate to the idiosyncratic characters, or perhaps they are quirky themselves. I will leave that for audiences to decide.”
Under Milk Wood was written as a play for voices and it is usually performed on radio. In this case, however, CTC is bringing it to life on stage in various creative ways. “As we get closer to opening night, we are finding it more and more dream-like,” Michelle says. “The poetic words are mesmerising, and we are hoping to absorb the audience in the colourful world we have created”.
It’s 24 hours in the life of a small town”¦ a poetic, lilting and humorous portrayal of the dreams, hopes and regrets of a seaside community.
“I think the play will appeal to Maldon folk,” Michelle says, “And hopefully, everyone will come to see the people they know.”
