Documentary filmmaker says attitudes toward end of life are changing

More Australians have a better quality of life because they are bravely confronting the reality of death, according to a documentary filmmaker.

All About Me Films founder Dan Thomas says after scores of interviews with people dealing with grief one thing has become increasingly clear – the more open to the reality of the end of life, the more likely we are to make the most of it.

Wednesday, August 30, is National Grief Awareness Day and an important opportunity to acknowledge the impact of personal loss and how it can actually improve our lives.

“Grief is part of life but how we deal with it has huge consequences for those left behind,” Mr Thomas says.

“When a loved one dies, the void they leave affects everybody differently.”

Mr Thomas says demand for his personalised documentary service has significantly increased as more older Australians reflected on their life and legacy.

“I think the pandemic offered us all pause and for older Australians in particular, a chance to think about what legacy they had laid out for their families and how they want to be remembered.”

He said across dozens of interviews a trend had emerged as participants either reflected on the loss of a partner, a family member or friend.

“Sharing a deeply personal story is a cathartic experience but for many getting to that point is a tremendous challenge,” Mr Thomas says.

“To be able to talk about loss and to laugh or cry in the process is a significant step toward healing and it can help others.

“Grief can inspire individuals to prioritize meaningful connections, live authentically, and pursue their passions and dreams.”

“It serves as a reminder to embrace and make the most of the time we have with our loved ones.

Mr Thomas said the documentaries were not limited by topics, with those featured reflecting on everything from childhood moments to life or death decisions that impacted their lives long term.
