Spotlight on volunteering in Yanchep and Two Rocks

Recent stories

If you visit the Yanchep Central shopping centre Sunday, May 21 make sure you check out the space where community groups have been celebrating National Volunteer Week.

During the week Two Rocks Yanchep Assisted Cancer Travels, (TRYACT), Two Rocks Yanchep Culture & Arts Network (TRYCAN), Two Rocks & Yanchep Residents Association, Yanchep Community Men’s Shed, Yanchep Two Rocks RSL, Liam James McLaughlin Memorial Hospice, Yanchep Two Rocks Probus Club and Story Dogs have all had stalls in the old Westpac space.

All the above community groups and Yanchep Community Garden, Yanchep Two Rocks Community Association (which also runs the Yanchep Community Bus) and Yanchep National Park have had information and brochures available for the general public so they can see what community groups in the area offer.

On Saturday TRYACT, which provides subsidised transport for residents who need assistance to attend cancer treatments celebrated its 10th anniversary.

The not-for-profit organisation also organises fundraising events and sponsors, creates awareness of TRYACT within the local community and recruits volunteers to assist with driving, administration and fundraising.

TRYACT president Sue Dash said the aim was to run a similar week next year to tie in with National Volunteer Week.

TRYACT treasurer Jo Hutchins said they hoped that more groups and clubs including sports clubs looking for volunteers would take part next year.

FRP Capital provided the space for the National Volunteer Week celebrations while Domino’s Pizza Yanchep donated pizzas and Woolworths Yanchep supplied fruit and bottled water for the volunteers.

On May 14 Volunteering Minister Stephen Dawson launched National Volunteer Week alongside volunteers from the Two Rocks Marine Rescue Service who were presented with a brand-new vessel called Neptune.

The $750,000 boat will better enable the marine rescue service to respond to emergencies at sea.

“The team at Two Rocks Marine Rescue Service epitomise this volunteering spirit – they give up so much of their time and are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week,’’ Mr Dawson said.

“This selfless organisation is made up of people from all walks of life – they are retirees, students, professionals and tradespeople, all united by a common goal to help others and make a difference.’’

Not-for-profits and sports clubs in the area are eligible for a free listing on the Yanchep News Online Local Directory and a free once a month Classifieds ad.
