Two community gardens could soon be available to residents on the Copper Coast.
The proposed garden lots at Pol green Park, Moonta, and Hughes Street, Wallaroo, are set to be guided by community consultation.
Copper Coast Council director infrastructure services Tim Neumann said the gardens would be designed by council parks and gardens staff.
“If the community is in favour, staff will explore relevant grant opportunities to establish the gardens, which will include raised garden beds, accessible paths, irrigation, fencing, rotunda/shelter/seating, and garden shed for supplies and fencing,” Mr Neumann said.
“Once completed, a community garden management committee should be established to manage and maintain the community garden for long-term success and sustainability of the gardens.
“The parcels of land in question are both located in central positions to the (Wallaroo and Moonta) CBDs, primary schools and nursing homes.
“The locations are adjacent to residential homes, as well as highly visible to deter any potential anti-social behaviour.”
Moonta and District Progress Association president (and Copper Coast elected member) Matthew Stock said they were fully supportive of the idea.
“I’ve spoken to several people who are struggling with the cost of living and this could really ease pressures on them,” Mr Stock said.
“The gardens would provide people easy access to produce whilst helping them socialise through a shared activity.
“I can see this project bringing people together.”
