New members for Allora Medical Support Group

Recent stories

For over twelve years Allora Medical Support Group have been ensuring Allora and surrounding community has a medical facility locally.

It is only through the generous support of the local community and a number of key visionary people that the Allora clinic is here.

Recently Gary Wilson (the chair of the current committee) along with the AMSG committee warmly welcomed Steven Harrop and Kay Jensen at the February meeting who answered the invitation in our last newspaper story.

Dr Peter Thomas was welcomed onto the committee at our April meeting.

Some of you may remember when the medical practice started up in the Donovan building.

As per the Allora Historical Society Inc (another great community group) this building was probably built in the 1860’s as a small house for Daniel and Margaret Leggatt.

In the 1880’s a small shop was added to the front and operated by Margaret Leggatt until it closed in 1891.

The building was then occupied by several different businesses including a photographer, jeweller, milliner and a plumber.

In 1895 Patrick Donovan started Donovan’s Auction Mart in Allora.

Hence the Donovan building came into its name.

We note also that the building has been heritage listed by the Southern Downs Regional Council.

The Donovan building has seen a few different looks over the last ten years as a variety of businesses have rented the building.

Currently Meghan & Co has been operating at the Donovan building.

The funds received from the rental of the two buildings go towards maintenance and development plus the ever increasing insurance invoice.

“We are very proud of the health facilities the Allora Medical Support Group administers on behalf of the Allora community and look forward to continuing to do so into the future,” stated Jon Constable Vice chair (past chair of many years).
