Cruise ship terminal boost for Port Lincoln

City of Port Lincoln, Media Release, 21 June 2022

Port Lincoln will further cement itself as a premier cruise ship destination with the construction of new terminal facilities set to be complete before the commencement of the cruise ship session later this year.

Located at Brennan’s Wharf, adjacent the former Sub Station being the ‘Red Shed’ and linked to the Parnkalla Trail Wharf Precinct, passengers will be able to safely make their way to the terminal facility to access shade and seating, rather than wait on the busy wharf, thereby improving the overall welcome to the city.

The terminal facility will include a passenger bathroom, additional shelter and seating, a pop up information centre, safety fencing, bus pick up point, signage, and storage. The project will cost $230,000, with $200,000 from the South Australian Tourism Commission, and $30,000 from Flinders Ports.

City of Port Lincoln Mayor Brad Flaherty says the plans will further strengthen the city’s standing as a tourist destination.

“Visitors will be much more warmly welcomed to our port, making for a comfortable experience for cruise ship passengers,” Mayor Flaherty said.

“A new terminal will provide safer, more suitable facilities, which will enable a smoother flow of passengers from ships into Port Lincoln.”

“By doing these works, we are ensuring Port Lincoln is well placed to attract more visitors once cruising activities increase. This will, in turn, boost our local economy especially our tourism, hospitality and retail sectors, which have struggled under the pressure of two years of COVID-19 restrictions and reduced visitation numbers.”

The new addition of a pop-up information centre on cruise ship days, located adjacent the fishing arm of Brennen’s Jetty, will give passengers all the information they need about Port Lincoln and surrounding areas.

The new bus pick up point at the base of the wharf will ensure passengers are collected safely, eliminating the need to cross roads or for buses to turn around in high traffic areas.

Local construction firm Plevin Builders has been awarded the contract, with construction well under way.

The terminal is expected to be completed in time for the arrival of the Coral Princess on September 18, 2022.
