Gingin trainer Cliff Green has Atlantis Beach on a seven-day back up after his win in the Crown Perth Handicap (1600m) on Roma Cup day.

Green said four-year-old Atlantis Beach was entered in the Free Entry To Belmont Park Handicap (2000m) on Saturday despite having drawn a sticky barrier.

Atlantis Beach is named after a housing estate in Two Rocks which in turn took its name from the suburb’s former Atlantis marine park.

The 18hh chestnut gelding has taken some time to mature mentally after being a bit overwhelmed by the gates in some of his earlier starts.

But Green who has always had a high opinion of the horse said these days he was loading well.

“He’s taking most things in his stride but still has his moments,’’ he said.

In the immediate he said there weren’t too many races in the program for the stayer so he would go back in the paddock.

In the long-term Green said finding suitable races could also prove difficult because at his height Atlantis Beach took a bit of balancing and needed more room with Ascot not really suiting him.

On Roma Cup day while carrying 58kg Atlantis Beach finished one and three-quarter lengths clear of his closest opposition to nail the second win of his career.

This Saturday he will carry 55.5kg but start from barrier 12 in a field of 15 with jockey Shaun O’Donnell retaining the ride.

The son of Toorak Toff and Vignor’s first win was a 1650m race on September 25 last year where he also started from a wide gate.

One of the gallopers he beat home last Saturday was his stablemate Hip Wiggle.

Green said the tempo of the race had been a tick or two below what it should have been to suit her.

“She needs a drop in class – she’s not up to that grade and she might need more distance – 1800 or 2000.’
