The Hon David Templeman, WA Tourism Minister, Media Release, 1 September 2021

The birthday of the world’s happiest animal, the quokka, will again be celebrated during the month of September at Rottnest Island.

The highlight of the festivities will be a birthday party on Sunday September 19 featuring kid’s activities, quokka-themed party games, and a special rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ for the guest of honour.

Free same-day travel and admission to the island will be provided for children 12 years and under during September.

The event program will offer families the perfect chance to see Spring quokka joeys emerging from the pouch.

The celebrations will also feature an evening bonfire and twilight quokka tours on Saturday 18 September.

Throughout September the island will also offer wildlife photography workshops with renowned animal photographer Alex Cearns where visitors can learn how to perfect their quokka portrait skills; and the Quokka Detective Treasure Hunt, a self-guided experience to allow visitors to learn more about the island while exploring the island by foot or bicycle.

The island also has a range of guided tours on sale. Visitors who book and travel during September and October will receive up to 50 per cent off select tours, plus free island admission.

Comments attributed to Tourism Minister David Templeman:

“This year’s Quokka Birthday celebrations will have something for all ages.

“The month-long event will make Rottnest one of Perth’s best day-trip destinations to explore this Spring.

“Come and join us in welcoming the newest generation of Quokka joeys as they leave the pouch for the first time.

“Spring is the perfect time to celebrate with the quokkas with brand new joey quokkas and a range of other wonderful outdoor experiences to explore on the island including whale migrations and Rottnest’s own wildflowers starting to bloom.

“With up to 50 per cent off selected tour packages, there is no better time to experience Rottnest with these great offers.”
