Nail-biting election: local result variations revealing
While the Australian Labor Party celebrates its national success after last Saturday's federal election, as the TT [Tarrangower Times] goes to press it is still not clear who will win the House of Representatives seat of Bendigo. Counting of preferences continues and it may come down to postal votes; the prospect of a recount is becoming a possibility.
Milthorpe rattles Ley’s base, and Webster stands dominant in Mallee
Just over 78 per cent of the nation turned out for Saturday’s vote. When it came to first preferences, the Australian Labor Party received 34.80 per cent of the primary vote, enjoying a +2.22 per cent improvement. As two-party preferred, those preferences boosted Labour to 54 per cent, with the coalition trailing on 45 per cent.
Nationals’ McCormack secures another term
Michael McCormack looks to have another term secured ...The national swing towards Labor was not felt in the Riverina region ... On a two candidate preferred basis there was a 3.1 per cent swing towards Mr McCormack, who secured 62.81 per cent of the vote over Labor candidate Mark Jeffreson's 37.19 per cent.
It’s a Haines hatrick
Supporters of Independent Member for Indi, Helen Haines, celebrate with her after her record third victory in Saturday’s federal election. Dr Haines’ predecessor, Cathy McGowan, took the seat from the LNP Coalition in 2013 and held it for two terms before handing the reins to Dr Haines for the 2019 election.
Garth returned
Incumbent Liberal National candidate Garth Hamilton has survived a strong challenge from Climate 200 backed independent Suzie Holt in Groom on an otherwise downcast election night for his party ... As of Tuesday, Garth Hamilton was polling more than double the first preference count his next opponent.
Ley set to retain seat
Despite a swing against her, and Labor winning the federal election in a landslide, Liberal Party incumbent Sussan Ley appears poised to retain the seat of Farrer. At time of publication Ms Ley held an estimated 62 per cent of the vote, ahead of first-time independent candidate Michelle Milthorpe, who is expected to capture more than 20 per cent of the vote tally.
‘Humbled, worried’: Pasin predicts troubled times during this fifth term
Hugh Schuitemaker. Water buybacks will loom large on the second-term Albanese Government's agenda, the re-elected Liberal Member for Barker has warned. Tony Pasin was easily returned for a fifth stint in office on Saturday, despite suffering a 3 per cent two-party-preferred swing against him, and seeing his primary vote dip below 50 per cent.
