Michael McCormack looks to have another term secured with Riverina voters turning out emphatically for the Nationals member in Saturday’s election.
The national swing towards Labor was not felt in the Riverina region when the electorate went to the polls on Saturday, with Nationals’ Michael McCormack attracting 40.91 per cent of the first preference votes from the 108 of 114 polling places tallied by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) by Sunday afternoon.
On a two candidate preferred basis there was a 3.1 per cent swing towards Mr McCormack, who secured 62.81 per cent of the vote over Labor candidate Mark Jeffreson’s 37.19 per cent.
Mr McCormack said the outcome was bittersweet given Labor’s return to power, but the Riverina win was indicative of the strength of the Nationals in the regions.
“Despite the new boundaries, despite everything that was thrown against us, despite having 12 opponents, the Nationals have again stood tall,” he said.
“I think that says something about the representation that I provide and the respect with which people regard the Nationals.”
More than one in 10 votes cast in the Riverina were invalid, according to the AEC’s tally room. At 10.38 per cent, the informal vote count was higher than that of 11 of the 13 candidates.
