Whyalla City Council, Media Release, 10 July 2025

Mayor Phill Stone and Whyalla City Council CEO Justin Commons met with steelworks and mining administrators KordaMentha at this week’s OneWhyalla community meeting, receiving an update on the administration process and the flow-on benefits it’s providing for the local community.

KordaMentha have been utilising the State and Federal governments’ $384 million support package over the past four months for capital projects and re-establishing inventory stocks, as part of the broader process to stabilise the business and make it safer and more predictable.

A significant portion of the funds spent so far have been invested in the Whyalla economy, utilising local suppliers and contractors. This stabilisation has seen daily cash losses broadly halved compared to pre-administration.

At the meeting, Mark Mentha praised the local employees, suppliers and contractors, who have gone above and beyond to enable the progress that’s been made.

Other benefits for the local community include:

  • More than 70 new operators being employed (reaching a total of 91 in the coming weeks)
  • More than 60 labour hire employees given permanent roles (providing more stable employment)
  • Nearly 30 new apprentices to be added to the existing 65

Mayor Stone said it was incredible to see this significant turnaround in such a short time and thanked everyone for their efforts and support.
