Petition calls for stamp duty relief for regional buyers

Recent stories

Residents across Yorke Peninsula are being encouraged to support a petition calling for stamp duty to be waived on existing homes for first homebuyers in regional South Australia.

The initiative, led by the City of Victor Harbor and supported by Barunga West Council and other regional councils, aims to reduce upfront costs for buyers and improve housing access in country areas.

The petition calls on the South Australian Government to remove stamp duty on existing homes valued up to $750,000 for eligible first homebuyers. Organisers are seeking 10,000 signatures before presenting the proposal to Parliament.

A Victor Harbor City spokesperson said the reform would help address workforce and housing challenges in regional communities.

“High upfront costs, including stamp duty, remain a significant barrier for first homebuyers,” the spokesperson said.

“Reducing these costs would make it easier for people to settle in regional areas, supporting local services, businesses and community sustainability.”

Regional councils say access to affordable housing is critical to maintaining essential services, including healthcare, education and trades.

The spokesperson said easing financial pressures on buyers would help attract and retain workers in regional towns.

Petition forms are inserted in this edition (April 8) of the Yorke Peninsula Country Times and can be returned to Barunga West Council offices or by post.
