Let’s celebrate heavy horses

This weekend Allora hosts the Darling Downs Heavy Horse festival at the Showgrounds.

This annual event is well known throughout Queensland and brings many visitors to town.

These Gentle Giants, known to help build this great nation, will visit Allora this weekend allowing you to experience the power of these majestic heavy horses.

For two awe-inspiring days the Clydesdale, Shire, Percheron and Draught Horses along with Gypsy Cob, Drum Horses, Donkeys, Mules and working Bullock teams will demonstrate their strength, versatility and docile nature.

Nowdays Heavy Horses are popular as a ridden horse so over the two days they will be competing in Hack and Utility classes, Dressage and even a Barrel Race.

To coincide with the ring events Old Trades will include Blacksmithing, an operational Horse Works and Wheelwrights rebuilding wagon wheels, rope making, ploughing and harness fitting. A marketplace will also be operating with Trade Vendors, Local Artisans, Handcrafts, Breed displays and local Community groups.

The Darling Downs Heavy Horse Festival is on this weekend – 14 and 15 March – at the Allora Showgrounds with gates open at 8am. Tickets are available at the gate – pay with cash or card. Single day entry $20 pp, weekend pass $30 pp. Pensioner day entry $15 pp, weekend pass $25 pp. Child 13-18 years day entry $15 pp, weekend pass $25 pp with under 13 years free when accompanied by an adult.
