Three questions with featured artist – Tim Ellis

Australian Rural & Regional News reminds readers that a media release is a statement of the author given. Media releases vary widely in reliability and may contain a combination of fact, aspirational statements, opinion, political commentary and even error. Especially on contentious issues, we suggest our readers read widely and assess the statements made by different parties and form their own view.

Tablelands Regional Council, Media Release, 9 February 2026

Tim Ellis’ current exhibition of paintings and new media, ‘Glimpses’ brings together cinematic compositions and bright, fluid brushstrokes for vivid, hyper-real scenes from his life in rural Far North Queensland. The scenes are familiar moments – almost nostalgic, that shift into the unexpected, capturing the quirkiness otherwise hidden in our daily symbols of everyday life – playfully inviting deeper consideration. Tim joins us to answer three questions about ‘Glimpses’, on display at the Tableland Regional Gallery until 7 March.

Tim, why do you think it’s important to bring new perspectives to these moments in time?

If you open your eyes and look at the world around you, you see the most amazing things. When you see new, odd or exciting things, it’s a pleasure to show them to others, and hopefully encourage them to cherish their own glimpsed moments.

Tell us about how you came to this body of work and how you’ve incorporated your history of working with different media?

This is a diverse collection of images, unified by the common theme: things that have caught my eye in passing, intriguing or random sights that tell a story about a time and place. My background is as an art director, creating sets for films and television. I have used techniques and mediums employed by scenic artists to create some of that realism and illusion in these paintings.

What will you be exploring next?

I like to explore rural Queensland towns for inspiration and images. I’m fascinated by the old buildings and hometown characters, so I will continue to paint those stories and places.

Award winning artist, Tim Ellis’ works can be viewed at www.timellis.com.au.
