Local show kicks more goals

After being in danger of folding several years ago, the Corryong Show underwent a revamp and a change of date which has revitalised the community event, culminating in it being named the Corryong Event of the Year at this year’s Australia Day ceremony.

In his report at the recent annual general meeting of the Corryong Show Society, president Evan Nicholas also said that incorporating the Corryong Historical Machinery Club’s annual rally with the event had been a success.

“Once again the show has been really well supported by our local community and also from the wider area,” he said.

“This year, after some preliminary discussions, we were fortunate to join forces with the machinery club.

“This brought two great weekends together and it just makes sense that into the future we have to try and make this weekend the very best we can.

“We want people to flock to our town in droves and have it marked on their calendar as a weekend not to miss which in turn is great for

“We thank both committees for making this happen.

“The aim of our show is to create an affordable event for all to enjoy with entertainment, food and music showcasing our local talents.

“This is all made possible by our generous sponsors which enables us to provide over $20,000 of free fun which culminates at the end of the night with a spectacular fireworks display.

“The pavilion is the heart of our show,” Evan added “and we thank all who contribute – the schools, the judges and stewards plus all the other helpers.

“This is then easily backed up by our local singing artists, finding our fastest trailer backer or finding out who’s dog can jump the highest. These events make our show and once again the animal nursery was a major hit and we thank the Low family for their support.

“Having the gymkhana also gives us a great horse event where our kids get to show off their skills and the bikes versus horses contest shows us the best of both worlds.

“The markets add something a little different

and we thank them all for their support as its nice to wander through them if you get a spare minute.

“This year we were a little short on food vans due to a couple of unavoidable issues which put the Lions and Rotary clubs under the pump but they know how to get things done and they were well supported by Papa Joe’s and Kate’s Gelato. Evan added.

“I’d also like to thank our committee who together we all chip in and get the little and big jobs done to make this

once a year event the success it is. The executive committee spend hours and hours chipping away and I can’t thank them enough. There’s quite a lot of information locked up in a few heads and those people are the heart of our show.

“Our town is a great little town and next year’s show will be our 117th.

“We have survived many challenges and into the future by combining the day with the machinery club rally we hope we can offer many more great days in the Upper Murray.
