The Hon. Julie Collins, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, 6 November 2025
The Albanese Labor Government continues to deliver more opportunities for Australian farmers and producers, with Pakistan approving market access for Genetically Modified (GM) canola from Australia.
Australia is a trusted and reliable supplier of canola to Pakistan, with non-GM canola exports valued at $506 million in the last financial year – making Pakistan one of Australia’s top markets for canola.
In the last year, around 46 per cent of Australian canola was genetically modified – with all commercially approved varieties now approved for import into Pakistan.
This is a major win for Australian GM canola producers, providing new opportunities for food, feed and processing supply.
The Albanese Labor Government has worked tirelessly to expand opportunities for our farmers and producers to export our world-class products on the international stage – with demand for Australian-made food and fibre showing no signs of slowing.
Australian agriculture, fisheries and forestry exports were valued at more than $80 billion in 2024-25, with the gross value of production increasing by 30 per cent in real terms throughout the past 20 years.
Since coming to government, the Albanese Labor Government has recorded 231 market access achievements, opening 29 new markets, protecting 81 markets in the face of trade threats, restoring 17 markets where trade was lost, and making 104 improvements to existing markets.
