Local couple Isaac Anderson and fiancé Matilda Moore have taken over the reins at East Greenmount’s Wheatsheaf Hotel and have bold new plans for the historic establishment.
Isaac and Matilda officially took over the pub and the adjoining café The Wheatsheaf Store on Sunday, 28 September and it has been closed ahead of a grand re-opening taking place this Saturday, 18 October from 11am until late.
East Greenmount and surrounding communities such as Ramsay, Ascot and Budgee are buzzing at the prospect of having a local pub open seven days a week from 11am.
Living not far from the hotel, Isaac said the inspiration to start running it came from trying to go there for a feed only to find it closed.
The Wheatsheaf Hotel was closed for several years before it was sold and extensively renovated before re-opening in September last year.
Aside from expanded opening hours, Isaac said they plan to make use of a projector outdoors to display big events such as the Melbourne Cup and State of Origin.
They also plan to greatly extend the range of grocery products sold at the Store, including Norco milk and local eggs, providing a handy location for locals who otherwise have to travel to Clifton, Toowoomba or Cambooya for everyday items.
With a work background more outdoors, Isaac, aged only 24, is jumping headfirst into the endeavour (although he said he does have plenty of experience on the other side of the bar!), however Matilda does bring some helpful experience having previously worked at the Cameron Corner Store on the Queensland border with New South Wales and South Australia.
Isaac said for the time being, The Wheatsheaf Store will continue to operate from 6.30am to 2pm on weekdays and 7am to 2pm on weekends.
He said he and Matilda are looking forward to meeting everyone on Saturday at the grand re-opening.
